Seed Savers Exchange Membership
Seed Savers Exchange is a membership organization with an annual membership fee and three annual membership publications. One of those annual publications, Seed Savers Yearbook (mailed each February), makes available (only to SSE’s members) the seeds of more than 11,000 rare varieties of vegetables, fruits and grains. In other words, each year SSE’s members offer nearly twice as many vegetable varieties as are available from all of the mail-order seed catalogs in both the U.S. and Canada. Become a SSE Member Now
Flower and Herb Exchange Membership
The Flower and Herb Exchange – the Flower and Herb Exchange (FHE), founded in 1989, is patterned after SSE but is a separate organization. FHE issues one publication each year mailed in March to more than 1,700 members. The 88-page 2004 Flower and Herb Exchange Yearbook contained the addresses of 200 members who were offering nearly 2,000 old-time flowers and herbs. FHE is re-creating the garden landscapes of the past by reintroducing plants that once bloomed in our grandparents’ gardens and yards. Thanks to FHE’s members, flowers and herbs that were rare are becoming abundant once again. Become a FHE Member Now
Specific benefits of membership include:
SSE Membership Publications
Our 8,000 members receive three publications each year:
Seed Savers Yearbook (450 pages, mailed in February)
Summer Edition (80-100 pages, August), and
Harvest Edition (80-100 pages, November).
Seed Savers Yearbook, the greatest source of heirloom varieties in the world, contains the addresses of more than 800 of our members and listings for more than 11,000 rare varieties of vegetables and fruits that they are making available to other SSE members. SSE’s publications have created a national awareness of heirloom varieties and the efforts to conserve them. Seed Savers Yearbook and Heritage Farm’s seed collections have provided the foundations for alternative seed companies throughout the U.S. Seed Savers Exchange and Heritage Farm have provided the models for genetic preservation projects and organizations in more than 30 countries.

Plus - Members are invited to our Annual Convention
Each summer since 1981, SSE has held its Annual Convention at Heritage Farm on the next-to-last full weekend in July when the Preservation Gardens are most beautiful. Keynote speakers have included Wendell Berry, Wes Jackson, Gary Nabhan, Pat Mooney, Roger Swain, Eliot Coleman, John Jeavons and Peter Hatch. About 250 of SSE’s members enjoy speeches, slide shows, garden and orchard tours and workshops, delicious local food and a barn dance. Attendance is limited to SSE’s members. Write to have your name placed on the “Mailing List for the Annual Convention.” Final details will be sent a month in advance. |
We rely on our membership to support our organization and to help sustain the diversity of heirlooms in our seed bank. However, membership is not required in order to purchase from this on-line catalog. Any gardener can order from this catalog.
Your purchases help this organization and its members. Membership gives you access to inventories of a much wider variety of seed offerings for flowers, herbs and vegetables.
