Hope & Practice
For 50 years, Exchange participants have been at the heart of SSE’s mission to save and share heirloom and open-pollinated seeds. From the first 29 gardeners and seed savers who listed seeds for swapping in 1975 to the hundreds who do so today, participating in the Exchange remains one of the most resilient and rewarding ways to ensure the survival of unique garden varieties.
As Seed Savers Exchange celebrates its first 50 years—and looks ahead to its next 50—there’s no better time to also celebrate the individuals who have kept the Exchange going strong since that very first seed swap so many years ago. Recently, SSE reached out to current Exchange participants and asked them to share not only their own seed stories but also advice for aspiring seed savers. In keeping with the sharing spirit that has defined this community from the start, many immediately replied and enthusiastically shared their stories of hope and practice. Those stories will be compiled and shared over the course of 2025.
