“I hope you will enjoy this lettuce recipe as much as we have over the years,” says Mary Katherine. “It’s an old German recipe—my mother had a special way of wilting the lettuce.”

  • 1 head of lettuce, cleaned
  • ¼ cup onion, diced
  • Dash of salt
  • 1-2 tablespoons of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of bacon grease or oil

Preparation

Place cleaned lettuce in a pan; then add the onion, salt, oil, and just enough milk to barely cover the bottom.

Turn the burner on low and stir the lettuce until you can feel the pan getting very hot.

Turn off the burner and stir the mixture until the lettuce is rather warm.
