Seed Packing Machine Operator

FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Position Status: Regular, Full-time
Reports to: Seed Inventory Coordinator
Supervisory Role: No
Compensation: $20.00/hour

Primary Role: 

Working under the Seed Inventory Coordinator, the Seed Packing Machine Operator will be directly responsible for coordinating day to day operations of the seed packing machine and assisting in the Seed House as directed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Primary person responsible for operating large scale seed packing machines
  • Work with Seed Inventory Coordinator to schedule, and complete seed packet builds of 100-3,000+ packets per variety
  • Inform the seed inventory coordinator if the amount of seed going into a packet seems wrong based on incorrect SPG or average packet weight
  • Be able to hand pack varieties if needed, both glassine packets and regular seed packets
  • Follow organic and conventional seed packing guidelines
  • Master, and train other employees to use seed packing equipment including the packet printer and large scale seed packing machines
  • Perform routine maintenance and clean-up of the machines
  • Inform the seed inventory coordinator when more supplies for the machine may need to be ordered (examples: ink for the packets, grease for the machine, suctions cups, glue, etc)
  • Alert the Seed Inventory Coordinator or Business and Sales Director if anything on the machine breaks
  • Work in conjunction with the Bulk Inventory Coordinator to pack bulk seed as required throughout the year, but especially in winter months when sales are high
  • Help with the mid year and end of year inventory counts in the seed house
  • Assist in the help of events hosted by SSE throughout the year
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Business and Sales and/or Seed Inventory Coordinator

Skills: 

  • Mechanical and technical aptitude sufficient to operate, train, and troubleshoot seed packing and printing equipment.
  • Leadership and ability to foster a healthy, productive work environment.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to learn and navigate NeSuite, SSE’s warehouse system

Physical Requirements:  

  • Ability to sit at a computer screen for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds routinely, and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work in cool (45 ̊F) for extended periods

Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma and/or equivalent experience 
  • Self-motivation, attention to detail, and ability to organize tasks
